What’s the difference between “income” and “wealth”? I recently spent a couple of hours milling around an airport terminal with nothing to do, so I decided to ask that question of several people who were also killing time waiting on flights. Their answers surprised me. Although they stated it a little differently, most of their comments centered on the idea that the more income one had the wealthier they were.

One might say that wealth is having an abundance of whatever is important to you. In today’s younger people’s vernacular, the answer is simply, “Duh!” Of course you’d like a better job or higher pay. Who wouldn’t? The question is, “What are you doing about it?”
Let’s explore an underlying principle of the employer/employee relationship. There is an unwritten agreement that accompanies most employment. This agreement is simple. You agree to give your best to the employer for the time you will be employed. The employer agrees to pay certain compensation in exchange. Some negotiation may take place first, but when the employer agrees to employ you and you agree to accept the employer’s compensation, an agreement has been reached whether it’s written or not. When you accept the job, do you best and are then paid, the agreement is fulfilled. You don’t owe the employer anything else and the employer doesn’t owe you any more. It’s what happens beyond this agreement that earns merit raises and promotions.
